DO research the company. As soon as you schedule an interview (or before), search the company online. You should read reviews from past employees and learn about the company on their main website. You should know what and who you are working for.
DO a practice run. Look up the directions and make sure you know where the interview is located ahead of time.
DO make a list of questions you want to ask the hiring manager: Some great questions to ask may be:
– What do you like most about working here?
– What would my typical work day consist of?
– Do you have a lot of employees that have worked here for a year or more?
DON’T wear casual clothes. Dress to impress! Depending on the position you are interviewing for, always dress at least one ‘stage’ higher than the position applying for. For example, if you will be wearing jeans every day, then wear khakis and a nice button down shirt to the interview. If you will be wearing khakis every day, then wear nice dress pants with a button down and a tie to the interview.
DO arrive 10-15 minutes early. This will give you time in case you get stuck in traffic, get lost, etc.
DON’T smoke a cigarette or spray cologne/perfume before an interview. You do not want the hiring manager to be holding his/her breath the whole time.
DO turn your phone on silent or completely off (it won’t kill you). A phone ringing, notification, or alarm is a major red flag to the hiring manager who took time out of their day to talk to you. Be respectful. And DON’T even think about using your phone during an interview, even to check the time. PHONES ARE A HUGE NO-NO! It does not make you seem important, only rude.
DON’T lie or exaggerate on your resume or cover letter. It is so easy for hiring managers to recognize a liar. They can ask simple questions and know if you truly have the experience you say you do.
DON’T swear or cuss. This may seem obvious, but many applicants start to feel too comfortable once they have been in the interview for a while.
DO be excited and cheerful, but DON’T make it seem forced. They want somebody who truly wants the job.
DON’T talk negatively about your past employers or coworkers! This can make them think that you will talk negatively about your next ones, as well.
DO show how you can make an impact on the company. Sell them on why they should hire YOU over the other applicants and what makes you stand out. You will win them over if you have a good answer to the question, “Why should we hire you?” DON’T reply with something general that everyone else would say.
DO be yourself and DO thank them for their time!
